Eco-cool (yes cool)

For years, I have touted green living, and tried desperately to figure out a way to do my part, and help save this wonderful planet. But honestly, it ain’t an easy road…and not a really a supported road…kinda like trying to get to cottage country on a Friday night with a million other weekend trippers…trapped desperately on the 400, and getting more annoyed with every brake light you see.

I feel desperate to do my part, but aside from new energy efficient light bulbs and turning off the water between tooth brush rinses, I was lost. A few weeks ago I learned that Al Gore was coming back to Toronto to give another lecture of his Inconvenient Truth…well I nearly fell off the couch in glee! For the low low price of 95.00 buck a rooney dooneys (it better be going to save a polar bear or something), I just knew it was going to be life changing.

We arrived extra early and waited in line for our turn to rush in and get a good seat…but not before we had to wait in front of the nerdiest mcnerds in the world. You know the type…got the tickets for free…all business-y and talking like they know EVERYTHING…the kicker was when they started talking about the show and the environment and how they don’t really believe the climate is changing…and then the kicker…one of them actually said that Siberia was in the states…OMG…case and point.

The show was fantastic, albeit terrifying, and I left the auditorium with a renewed feeling of hope, that we WILL make a difference! With fervor I leapt into all the green kiosks with a determination that I will strive forward and become a 'cool' tree hugger! What I didn't expect was the plethora of really cool people working together to design some wicked eco-clothes, funky (& friendly) cars, and my absolute favorite - the eco-lawn!

This was something I can definitely do...buy a bag of grass seed for like 30 bucks and watch the skies open up, and the heavens look down on me and say - geesh Kelly - look at you - making a difference! Ok I am being dramatic, but this is such a cool idea...it is a new type of lawn - that looks JUST like regular grass, but it doesn't ever have to be mowed, watered, or fertilized!

I just want you to digest that for a second...

I mean, cool right?! It is a new blend of fescue grasses that is drought resistant because of the extra long root system…so it grows slower – no need to mow if you don’t want to…and it doesn’t need the copious amounts of water to look great!

It was even on the news the next week! I thought – wow – if everyone does this it will be so great…and for once I felt that small surge of hope, that we really WILL make a difference.

Then I saw a man water his driveway for 20 minutes yesterday…sigh…one person at a time…
